[China-Venezuela Joint Fund] CDB funds USD 100 million National Public Lighting Plan On March 31, 2014, the Venezuelan government approved the use of USD 375 million from the China-Venezuela Joint Fund (see Record ID#58377) for four projects to improve of the national electricity system (Spanish: Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN)).
One of the projects was the National Public Lighting Plan (Spanish: Plan Nacional de Alumbrado Público). The project cost USD 100 million and involved replacing and rehabilitating public lighting in towns and along highways. Work began in Caracas on May 14, 2014. The project was intended to improve lighting around the country.
It was implemented by CORPOELEC, the Venezuelan state-owned electricity company. Two years after the project started, 70% of public lights in Caracas were described as being in "poor condition". It is unclear when, or if, this project was completed.
The other projects for which the USD 375 million was allocated were USD 93 million for new transmission substations (see Record ID#94081), USD 80 million for the Plan to Eliminate Illegal Taps (see Record ID#94082), and USD 100 million for the acquisition of special units for the electrical sector (see Record ID#94084).
