On October 12, 2020, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi oversaw the signing of the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA), and a economic and technical cooperation agreement through which China will provide RMB 950 million or approximately USD 140 million in in free assistance for urgent development projects at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh.
The grant was to be used for projects in Sihanoukville, including a submarine optical fibre cable to Hong Kong, construction on National Road 71C, rural power transmission lines and to boost rice production and export.
The money will also be used for irrigation and flood protection projects in Kampong Speu province’s Prek Tnaot river and expanding and upgrading National Roads 41, 33, and 31. There are also other unspecified projects likely to be funded by these funds.
