Grant Description

In August of 2020, Shanxi Investment Construction Engineering Group donated disaster relief materials to Mauritius following a large oil spill that took place near Blue Bay Marine Park.

The oil spill took place after the Japanese freighter Wakashio ran aground near the Blue Bay Marine Park while on its way to Brazil. This crash took place on July 25, 2020. On August 6th, oil began to leak from the ship. As of August 19, 2020, about 1,000 tons of heavy oil had leaked and polluted the nearby sea and beaches.

The Mauritian government declared a state of environmental emergency.

The supplies donated by Shanxi Investment Construction Engineering Group included 200 pairs of rubber shoes, 200 pairs of rubber gloves, 300 bottles of mineral water and other relief materials.

The materials were shipped to various designated locations where the company’s project staff and locals worked to make oil separators, put sugarcane leaves and plastic bottles on geotextiles, and place them in the sea to prevent the spread of oil.

The donation was part of a larger effort by Chinese state enterprises to assist in the oil spill cleanup (captured in Record ID#92240).
