Grant Description

On October 7, 2020, the Chinese Government and the Government of Botswana signed a debt forgiveness agreement. The agreement was signed by Botswana’s Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Thapelo Matsheka and the Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Dr. Zhao Yanbo.

China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) agreed to agreed to cancel RMB 15.6 million ($2.2 million) of the Government of Botswana’s outstanding debt obligations.

These obligations resulted from an interest-free loan that the Government of Botswana contracted for the Phase 1 of Gaborone Multi-Purpose Youth Centre Project (as captured via Record ID#23) in 2001. This loan was scheduled to mature by December 31, 2020.
