On July 13, 2020, the city of Guangzhou provided a donation of 20,000 surgical masks and 30,000 KN95 masks to Quito, Ecuador.
The masks would subsequently be delivered to Quito's Ministry of Health, which reported 900 blue surgical masks were also part of the donation. The Ministry of Health estimated that donated masks were worth USD 27,762 in total.
Once delivered to Quito's Ministry of Health, the supplies were to be distributed to various locations and organizations. The recipient of the largest number of masks was Ministry of Health personnel generally.
Masks also went to nurses and doctors of the Bicentennial Temporary Care Center and Ministry of Health staff specifically on the "health brigades" responsible for conducting COVID-19 tests in neighborhoods.
Additionally, supplies were distributed to Project PREMAQ, Isidro Ayora Gynecological Obstetric Maternity Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, Quito's Metropolitan Public Company for Passenger Transportation, Quito's Social Inclusion Ministry, the North Metropolitan Health Unit, the Central Metropolitan Health Unit, Manuela Sáenz Administration Zone, and radio stations in Quito.
The handover ceremony was held in the cargo area of Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport and was attended by Ambassador Chen Guoyou, Political Counselor of the Embassy Wang Xinming, and Quito Mayor Jorge Yunda Machado.
