Grant Description

On March 23, 2020, the Chinese Embassy handed over a donation of medical supplies to Ecuador's National Government and several sub-national governments for the prevention and control of COVID-19.

The entire donation consisted of 70,000 surgical masks, 2,500 N95 masks, 5,180 protective suits, and 140 portable infrared thermometers.

Of the total supplies, 40,000 surgical masks, 1,500 N95 masks, 4,000 protective suits, and 100 infrared thermometers were donated to Ecuador's Office of the President. The Provincial Government of Pichincha received 10,000 surgical masks and 340 protective suits. The remainder of the supplies were donated to the Municipal Governments of Quito and Guayaquil.

A handover ceremony was held for this donation in Quito, Ecuador. Ecuadorian Vice President, Otto Sonnenholzner, received the batch of supplies on behalf of Ecuador.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Minister of Communications were also present at the handover ceremony.

📋 Staff Comments

1. One source from the Vice-presidency of Ecuador reported that a commitment to donate the relevant supplies was signed on March 23. However, both a subsequent article from Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a March 25 article from China's Embassy in Ecuador report that supplies were handed over on March 23. The article from the Chinese Embassy specifically notes a handover certificate was signed on the 23rd. Given the majority of official sources support this timeline, it is assumed that the supplies were actually handed over, and thus the project completed, on March 23, 2020.AidData has estimated the transaction amount for this donation based on price catalogues from the World Health Organization (WHO). Please see the TUFF Methodology for additional details.
