In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the South-South cooperation projects as a joint global effort towards development.
In November 2018, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel ratified the importance of Xi’s proposal during a visit to China, following a bilateral cooperation MOU signed by the two nations.
At the end of 2019, China and Cuba updated these cooperation documents to implement the “Ten Hundred Thousand” ("十百千") project of South-South cooperation proposed by President Xi Jinping and the “One Belt, One Road” South-South Cooperation Plan on Climate Change.
The project included a donation of 5,000 sets of solar photovoltaic power generation systems to help Cuba solve the problem of electricity consumption for residents in remote rural areas and improve its ability to cope with climate change.
On May 24, 2021, the material handover ceremony for the China-Cuba South-South Cooperation Project on Climate Change was successfully held in Shenzhen. The equipment offered by the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment arrived between June 2021 and April 2022. On May 25, 2022, the solar panels arrived in Cuba.
These systems are composed of two 300-watt photovoltaic solar panels that allow the connection of five lighting points (LED lamps that are attached to the system) and a low-power household appliance, such as a television, radio, fan, or cell phone charger.
