Grant Description

In 2015, the Chinese Government pledged to fund the construction of breakwaters for Gwadar Port via grant (captured in Record ID#88743) and concessional loan (see Record ID#52543) financing. The value of each component is unknown. The total project cost was estimated to be around USD 123 million. It is unclear whether a Chinese financial institution ever formally committed to financing this project.

This China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project will involve construction of berthing facilities on the eastern side of the existing multi-purpose terminal at Gwadar Port. A 1,200-1,500 km long breakwater will also constructed. It is unclear whether this project ever entered implementation.

As of July 2022, the project is under investigation by the Chairman Prime Minister's Inspection Team with assistance from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Planning, Development and Special Initiatives and Economic Affairs to understand why the project has been delayed despite committed Chinese financing.

The preparation of PC-1 is under process with Ministry of Maritime Affairs.

AidData assumes that this project is related to but distinct from the Gwadar Port Berthing Areas and Channels Dredging Project (see Project #52544) mainly because the cpec.gov.pk website lists two separate project entries for them (see http://cpec.gov.pk/gwader).
