Grant Description

In September 2018, the Chinese government announced that it would provide 6,500 tons of food aid to the Somali people, including rice, corn, beans, vegetable oil and specialty nutritious food.

This donation was made after President Xi Jinping met with Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed during the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The donation was implemented in different batches. On June 12, 2019, 2,000 tons of rice arrived in Somalia. The food aid was provided as a part of the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund.

The WFP is responsible for the distribution of the food around the country to those affected by Somalia's drought.

📋 Staff Comments

This project is coded as an umbrella project because the Chinese government seems to send the food aid in batches under this larger agreement. So far, #70383 is one such instance.
