Grant Description

On February 13, 2001, China’s Ministry of Defense and the Cambodian Ministry of Defense signed an RMB 30 million ($3.7 million) grant agreement (see Record ID#32020).

Then, on May 8, 2001, the Government of Cambodia announced that the Chinese Government had agreed to earmark $1.7 million of the grant proceeds for the renovation of the Preah Ket Mealea Military Hospital (មន្ទីរពេទ្យព្រះកេតុមាលា:) in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

The project involved the procurement of construction equipment in order to renovate the five-story building and improve nearby drainage and roads. Construction was slated to begin in November 2001, according to Co-Minister of Defense Prince Sisowath Sirirath. The project was ultimately completed in 2005.

In 2007, four Chinese medical experts were dispatched to the hospital (as captured via Record ID#62711).
