In early 2019, the Health Commission of Hunan Province (湖南省卫生健康委员会) invited medical doctors Donald Samuel Bangura and Wuyah Novella Sheriff of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital (中塞友好医院) to undertake a three month pathology training course at the Hunan Cancer Hospital (湖南省肿瘤医院) in China.
The training of the two Sierra Leoneans would enable the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital to establish a pathology department.
The three month training course focused on knowledge and technology of pathology, and it enabled them to complete the whole process of pathological specimen section, which they were able to experiment with at the end of the learning stage.
The two doctors were also supported by members of the 21st China Medical Team who actively assisted them to keep in touch with the Health Commission of Hunan Province. It is unclear when the doctors began or completed training.
As of late December 2019, the two doctors were still working together with the 21st China Medical Team, and they were directly responsible for specimen preparation, management of pathological data, and getting diagnostic advice from telepathological consultation.
The training initiative follows the establishment of a remote pathology platform at the hospital which connected local medical staff with specialists at the Hunan Cancer Hospital (recorded in Record ID#62600).
