Grant Description

In 2006, the Chinese Government provided a $3 million grant to the Government of Mongolia for the Zamyn-Uud Container Inspection Complex Construction Project.

The purpose of the project was to construct a container inspection complex — complete with computer systems and X-ray machinery — at the Zamyn-Uud border post. The ultimate goal of the project was to achieve faster cargo clearance through customs. Container trucks and cargo trucks loaded with goods are escorted to this inspection site at the Zamyn-Uud border post.

Clearance then takes about 3 to 5 minutes and images of the screening are captured and attached to cargo declarations.

The screening report is also used to determine the extent of examination by customs officers when the containers are presented at the integrated clearance offices (ICOs). The project was completed and the handover ceremony for the project was held on January 7, 2006.
