Grant Description

In January 2005, Guyana experienced one of its largest natural disasters.

Torrential rainfall caused extensive flooding along the densely populated coast, particularly in the stretch of coast between the capital of Georgetown and Mahaica on the eastern bank of Demerara River. The flooding impacted over 290,000 people (39% of the Guyanese population).

Weeks after the initial flood, many houses and villages remained filled with water and were only accessible by boat, while the risk of a disease outbreak remained high.

In response to this crisis, in January or February 2005, the Chinese Government donated pumps to Guyana to support flood recovery efforts. The Chinese Government also provided a $100,000 USD cash donation to Guyana, as captured by linked Record ID#73728.
