Grant Description

On 2 March 2012, the Chinese Ministry of Education signed a financing agreement committing to provide $8 million over four years to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The purpose of this UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust (CFIT) Project was to accelerate progress towards providing education for all, and the education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Phase 1 of the UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust (CFIT) Project began in 2012 and ended in 2016 (see Record ID#53170).

In 2016, the Chinese Ministry of Education pledged an additional $4 million for Phase 2 in which $2 million was allocated to the original eight participants from Phase 1 and the remaining $2 million was used to accomodate the new additions of Zambia and Togo.

Therefore, the total number of recipients included: 1) Côte d’Ivoire (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86930) 2) Ethiopia (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86932) 3) Namibia (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86936) 4) Republic of Congo (2013 – 2016) (Record ID#86937) 5) Democratic Republic of Congo (2013 –2016) (Record ID#37315) 6) Liberia (2013 – 2016) (Record ID#30767) 7) Tanzania (2013 – 2016) (Record ID#86938) 8) Uganda (2013 – 2016) (Record ID#37942) 9) Zambia (2017 – 2018) (Record ID#52408) 10) Togo (2017 – 2018) (Record ID#86939) Phase 2 of the CFIT Project specifically aimed to "enhance the capacity of the target teacher training institutions in selected African countries to provide quality teacher education and training." The handover ceremony for Phase 2 was held on October 22, 2018.
