Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): THORPEX is an international research programme whose scope is global and which aims to accelerate improvements in the accuracy of 1-day to 2-week high-impact weather forecasts.
These improvements will lead to substantial benefits for humanity, as we respond to the weather-related challenges of the 21st century. High-impact weather forecasts are defined by their effect on society, the economy and the environment.
As such, THORPEX is an element of the WMO World Weather Research Programme and is a major contribution to the WMO Natural Disaster Reduction and Mitigation Programme.
