Grant Description

Since 2009, stakeholders on the issue of counter-trafficking have been engaged in various processes of consultation with regard to concerns related to the trafficking of persons, especially children, in the lead-up to and duration of the Fdration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup to be held in South Africa in June and July of 2010.

IOM has consulted with both government and civil society organizations in this regard and has encouraged stakeholders to take a holistic approach, noting the critical need to create awareness and increase protection mechanisms.

NGOs in South Africa, however, face financial challenges and this has hampered their ability to reach out to communities through prevention and capacity building activities, and to victims of trafficking with direct assistance.

In order for them to be able to address concerns with regard to trafficking during the critical time of the FIFA World Cup and to benefit from IOM consultation on their planned activities, the provision of funds to these NGOs through IOM will result in measurable outcomes.
