Grant Description

U.S. State Department, Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Activity for Democracy, Education and Humanitarian Programs.

Embassy programs that advance USG democracy promotion goals in Burma by supporting civil society development and promoting non-government media.

The funds wereused to expand the existing small grants program, thereby empowering and enhancing the capacity of civil society organizations while creating opportunities for these groups to address local community needs.

Embassy Rangoon also funded an established organization in Burma to provide further civil society training and capacity building to particularly promising small grant recipients.

Remaining funds were used to expand American Center programs, particularly journalism courses to increase the skills and professionalism of journalists and editors working for Burma's non-government press,
