Grant Description

Takwa National Monument, an ancient Swahili settlement on Manda Island, is an important archaeological site that offers insights into medieval Swahili civilization and its interactions with other Indian Ocean cultures.

The project aims to restore and conserve the monument, improve visitor facilities, and establish a center to address the impacts of environmental threats and promote sustainable practices.

Activities include rebuilding collapsed ruins, fencing the site, repairing visitor and staff facilities, and creating a climate change adaptation demonstration center with various educational and community engagement initiatives.
