To enable the restoration of four murals in the lobby of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila, by the National Museum. Founded in 1907, PGH was the Philippines first public hospital. The murals were painted by Carlos Francisco in 1954. He received the country s highest honor and was named a National Artist posthumously in 1973.
The murals depict four phases in the development of medicine in the Philippines from pre-colonial folk remedies to modern practice. Lack of maintenance and climate control has caused the deterioration of the paintings.
