Grant Description

To support the preservation of the most important of fifty-four cave monastery complexes along the Nistru river basin.

Dug in calcareous rock, the complex's unique architecture shows a stratified evolution starting with the end of the first millennium. In 1667, the complex was renovated into a fortress to fend off the attacks of frequent invaders. Neglect from the Soviet regime and an earthquake in 1977 caused considerable damage to the site.
