Grant Description

To support the preservation of the frescos in Siq al Barid.

These are the finest and most extensive fragments of original plaster and stucco frescos of Nabataean mural paintings dating from the first half of 1st cen BC.

The scenes depicted are similar to those found in Pompeii, Rome, and Alexandria but they maintain a regional distinctiveness. The greatest damage has been caused by smoke from fires burnt at the time the Bedouins were dwelling in the chamber. The project will clean and protect the frescos.
