Grant Description

On January 22, 2010, The Government of China pledged 500,000 USD to Haiti through the United Nations Development Programme.

The purpose of the donation was for cash for work in early recovery and stabilization, such as rubble removal for streets, houses, and public utilities, in Port-au-Prince affected communities.

The Cash for Work program would provide temporary employment for Haitians who had been economically impacted by the earthquake.

Goals also include contributing to the stabilization of the country and mainly areas affected by the earthquake, targeting host communities of IDPS, and enhancing the capacities of local authorities for effective services delivery and capacities of individuals to support the reconstruction efforts in Haiti.

The total amount committed to the project was $24,032,075, with $21,071,946 actually disbursed. 100% of the funds committed by the Government of China were actually disbursed.

Other organizations that provided funds that were actually disbursed included the Korean-American Association, the Korean Broadcast Company, various private individuals or organizations, the UN Emergency Response Fund, and the governments of Italy, Liechtenstein, Spain, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, Norway, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Japan.

The 500,000 USD pledged to the UNDP was announced alongside a pledge to donate 1 million U.S. dollars to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund, 500,000 to United Nations Children's Fund, 100,000 U.S. dollars to the United Nations Population Fund and 500,000 U.S. dollars to the World Food Programme.
