Grant Description

On July 27, 2011, the Chinese Government announced it would provide 90 million yuan in food aid to drought-affected countries in Africa, including 30 million yuan to Kenya. 50 million yuan would go to Ethiopia (see Record ID#1455) and 10 million yuan to Djibouti (see Record ID#59621). According to UNOCHA the project decision date was August 5, 2011.

On October 5, 2011, at Mombasa Port, Kenya, China's ambassador to Kenya, Liu Guangyuan, handed over the first two batches of grain to the Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as part of its 130 million CNY food aid after the regional famine (see Record ID#73776 for additional 100 million yuan aid).

The aid includes rice, wheat, beans, maize flour, and cooking oil. The first and second batches of the food aid totaled 2,500 tons of rice. The first batch had 500 tons of rice and arrived on September 28, 2011, the second batch arrived on October 1, 2011.

The third and fourth batches departed from China respectively on September 23 and 30, 2011, and were estimated to arrive in Mombasa before the end of October. The total value of the first four batches of grain is about 30 million yuan. The remaining 100 million yuan of grain was to be shipped from China soon after.
