In January 2005, Guyana experienced one of its largest natural disasters.
Torrential rainfall caused extensive flooding along the densely populated coast, particularly in the stretch of coast between the capital of Georgetown and Mahaica on the eastern bank of Demerara River. The flooding impacted over 290,000 people (39% of the Guyanese population).
Weeks after the initial flood, many houses and villages remained filled with water and were only accessible by boat, while the risk of a disease outbreak remained high (see pg.1 of "Emergency Humanitarian Aid Decision").
In response to this crisis, on February 5, 2005, the Chinese Government provided a $100,000 USD grant to the Government of Guyana to support flood recovery efforts. The Chinese Government also donated pumps to Guyana, as captured by linked Record ID#85736.
Project status was set as 'Completion' because it is clear that all Chinese financing was disbursed.
