In 2009, the first scholarships under the China-Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Scholarship Scheme were awarded to nine students from four Pacific Islands countries. This is a regional program in addition to existing bilateral scholarship schemes. It is open to all Pacific Island Forum members excluding Australia and New Zealand.
AidData failed to find a signed financing or implementation agreement, so the commitment year is unclear. The scholarships cover enrollment fees, living expenses, and travel allowances.
Out of the first nine scholarship winners, 5 from Samoa, 2 from Fiji, 1 from Solomon Islands, and 1 from Papau New Guinea.
