On July 21, 2018, the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping had offered Sri Lanka an RMB 2 billion (USD 295 million) grant. According to President Sirisena, the RMB 2 billion "gift" can be utilized for any project he wishes.
President Sirisena made the announcement a ceremony marking the start of construction of a Chinese-funded kidney hospital in Polonnaruwa (see Record ID#53654).
He mentioned that the Chinese ambassador visited his house to set the date for the hospital ceremony and announced the RMB 2 billion gift at that time.
President Sirisena said he plans to hand over a proposal to the Chinese ambassador to build houses in all the electorates in the country. The current status of the project is unknown.
