Grant Description

Since 2008, Amu Darya River Gas Company of China National Petroleum Corporation International (Turkmenistan) (CNPCIT) has sponsored the higher education of 166 Turkmen high school students at the China University of Petroleum - Beijing (CUPB). Students will train under a special five-year education program.

In their first year of study abroad, the students study Chinese.

After they pass the necessary examinations, the students then decide to study either petroleum engineering, chemical technology, geology, or another major.

After four years of coursework, they receive their bachelor's degree. 76 of the students who received the scholarship went to work in the oil and gas industry after their studies, while 57 students were studying at China University of Petroleum in July 2019.

On November 15, 2009, the first group of sixteen Turkmen youths received the scholarship. "China National Petroleum Corp International Turkmenistan will provide nearly $1 million for these 16 students to cover tuition fees, lodging and living costs," said Han Wenge, PR manager of the company in charge of the project.

In 2010, 15 Turkmen high school graduates received the scholarship. In 2019, 10 Turkmen high school graduates received the scholarship.

📋 Staff Comments

2008 was coded as the commitment year because these scholarships began that year; however, 'Year uncertain' box was checked because it is not confirmed that CNPC committed to these scholarships in that. Amu Darya River Gas Company of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which has many alternative names, appears to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNPC.
