Grant Description
In March 2007, Cote d'Ivoire's president laid the foundation stone for the Mahatma Gandhi Information Technology & Biotech Park, also called the Cote d'Ivoire Technology Park, located in Grand-Bassam 40 km southeast of Abidjan.
At the time, the Chinese and Indian governments reportedly financed two-thirds of the overall $402 million USD project cost. The financial breakdown is unknown. It is unclear whether China ever signed a final financing agreement. After 2007, there is very little reporting on Chinese financing for this project.
When the park was inaugurated on 27 June 2019, only the Government of India is mentioned as a source of funding and only Indian firms carried out implementation. Therefore, AidData assumes that the Chinese government decided not to participate in the project sometime after 2007. The purpose of this 600-hectare free trade zone was to promote biotechnology and information technology (IT).
It was supposed to generate 20,000 jobs in Cote d'Ivoire.
