In 2018, the Chinese Government launched the 2018 Kenya Emergency Food Aid Project, a donation of 11,835 tonnes of rice to be distributed to Kenyans suffering from drought. The total donation was worth KES. 1.2 billion shillings. The rice was to arrive in eight batches between 2019 and 2022. The first batch of 1,500 tonnes was delivered sometime in 2019.
Xinhua reported that a second batch of 1,500 tonnes would be delivered by the end of June 2019. The seventh batch of 945 tons arrived on Nov. 22, 2021. The eighth and last batch of 890 tons of rice was handed over in Nairobi on Feb. 14, 2022. The donations were received by Margaret Kobia, cabinet secretary for the Kenyan Ministry of Public Service.
The rice was to go to Kenyans in 23 counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands affected by drought.
According to Secretary Kobia, the rice donation will be distributed to schools to ensure the retention of students in schools during the drought period. This donation follows a similar donation of food aid from 2017 (see Record ID#59684).
