In November 2017, Ben Phiri received a K22 million cheque from Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Wang Shi-Ting on behalf of the Chinese government for the construction of a girls hostel at Mpinji Community Day Secondary School (CPSS) in the Thyolo District.
Phiri, a Malawian political party leader, is from the Thyolo district and regularly works on gathering funds for development projects there.
The purpose of this hostel, which accommodates 56 girls, is to lessen the burden of girls traveling up to 20 km distances to school and thus reduce absenteeism. This project was completed on October 29, 2018.
The Nyasa Times reported that Phiri received a K22 million cheque for the hostel, while the Malawi Nation reported that the structure was a 'K30 million hostel', so it's unclear how much the hostel actually cost to build.
