Grant Description

China Eximbank provides RMB 120 million government concessional loan for Container and Vehicle Inspection Equipment Project On September 7, 2009, the Export-Import Bank of China Eximbank signed an RMB 120,000,000 (or approximately $17,664,000 USD) government concessional loan (GCL) agreement with the Government of Syria for the Container and Vehicle Inspection Equipment Project.

The proceeds of the loan were to be used by the borrower to finance a commercial contract with Nuctech Company, Ltd. The purpose of the project was to purchase and install five customs (x-ray and THSCAN) scanners.

The scanners were earmarked for use in the Port of Latakia, the Port of Tartous (Tartus), and the Daraa Border Crossing. Nuctech Company, Ltd. was the contractor responsible for implementation.

According to a dataset of foreign-financed projects that the Syrian Planning Commission (SPC) provided to UNDP Syria in May 2011, this project commenced on January 1, 2007 and ended on December 31, 2009. The first scanner arrived in early 2008.
