Grant Description

On December 12, 2019, UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) signed an agreement with China International Development Cooperation Agency (中华人民共和国国家国际发展合作署) (CIDCA) for China to provide a USD $2 million grant to help the victims of Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe.

Cyclone Idai struck Zimbabwe on March 15, 2019, impacting more than 270,000 people.

The UNDP estimated that around 50,000 households, 12 health facilities, and 143 schools were damaged or swept away by the Cyclone. The donation came from the Fund for South-South Cooperation(南南合作援助基金) of Chinese Government. UNICEF cooperated with the South-South Cooperation to implement the humanitarian aid.

According to an article by the UNDP on July 3, 2020, the grant was being used to implement the Post Disaster Restoration Assistance project and would assist affected communities in Chimanimani and Chipinge.

The goal was to provide roofing materials and repairs for 237 households, 7 clinics, and 8 clinic staff houses, 66 toilets within 46 schools in Chimanimani, and 30 schools.

Roughly three years later on December 15, 2023, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, and UNDP representative in Zimbabwe, Ayodele Odusola, signed a completion certificate signifying the completion of the reconstruction project.

In addition, earlier on March 20, 2019, China provided a separate USD 800,000 grant to help the victims of Cyclone Idai in its immediate aftermath (see Record ID#62686).

📋 Staff Comments

1. According to Source ID #211902, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the project intended to repair 487 houses. However, the UNDP (see Source ID #150745) stated the number of houses slated for repair to be 237. The more conservative amount of 237 from the UNDP has been recorded in the project description.
