Grant Description

.Sierra Leone Compact - Electricity Distribution Project: Distribution System Rehabilitation & Extension Activity. The Distribution Refurbishment Activity addresses critical upgrades to Sierra Leones outdated and inadequate distribution infrastructure, categorized into safety, statutory, network-critical, and efficiency-related investments.

This initiative funds essential improvements such as replacing damaged low-voltage cabinets, upgrading transformers, enhancing electrical infrastructure, and replacing switchgear boards to ensure safe and efficient network operations..The Freetown Refurbishment Sub-Activity focuses on replacing two 40 MVA 161/11 kV transformers and protection panels at the Kingtom substation, the primary injection point for the Western Area grid.

These upgrades will enhance power delivery and reduce system losses.

Additional refurbishments include replacing 11 kV and 33 kV switchgear boards in Freetown substations to safely distribute electricity within the grid..The Western Area Refurbishment Sub-Activity prioritizes operational safety and reliability by addressing damaged low-voltage cabinets, adding reclosers on 33 kV and 11 kV networks, and replacing outdated overhead lines, underground cables, and 11/0.435 kV distribution transformers.

It also replaces failing 33 kV and 11 kV switchgear boards at substations.

These enhancements aim to reduce outages, prevent overloading, and improve power distribution for underserved communities in the Western Area..The District Towns Refurbishment Sub-Activity extends these improvements to towns outside Freetown and the Western Area.

Final refurbishment areas will be determined based on economic assessments, census data, budgetary considerations, and alignment with other compact investments..By upgrading critical assets and infrastructure, this activity enhances the safety, efficiency, and reliability of Sierra Leones electricity distribution network nationwide.
