Cuitzeo Lake is the second-largest, natural, freshwater wetland in Mexico and is one of the most important wetlands in the central highlands region for wintering waterfowl.
DUMAC and partners have developed an integrated Watershed Management Plan for the lake that has guided activities in previous phases. This fourth phase continues with the implementation of several Plan priorities.
This project will reduce sediment and contaminant flows to the lake by constructing structures for soil conservation and rehabilitating or constructing wastewater treatment plants and other technologies that retain and dispose of organic and agrochemical waste; these actions will enhance 2,002 acres of wetland habitat.
It will monitor water quality, birds and aquatic beds in the lake. It will also offer environmental education training to teachers and training on agriculture practices to farmers.
