Chinese Government pledges $267.41 million loan for 380MW Manipur Hydropower Plant Construction Project On September 18, 2014, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) of Myanmar and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) signed a memorandum of understanding on the 380MW Manipur Hydropower Plant Construction Project.
CHEC then submitted a project feasibility study a year later.
Either China Eximbank or China Development Bank was reportedly considering the issuance of an $267.41 million loan for the 380MW Manipur Hydropower Plant Construction Project.
The purpose of the project is to construct a 380MW hydropower plant in Kalay Township Falam District, Chin State (exact locational coordinates: 22.804356, 93.943248) on the Manipur River, a tributary to the Myittha. The project would have a 168 meter high dam with a reservoir storing 1,554 hm3. The power plant would be connected to Gangaw-Kalay s/s by a 32 km long 230 kV transmission line.
The project was designed to be implemented by a joint venture — including CHEC — on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. Sein of Myanmar was also said to be a local developer on the project. As of 2019, preparations for the restart of the Manipur Hydropower Project were implemented. The Chinese project title is 曼尼普尔水电站.
The Burmese project title is မဏိပူ.
