Grant Description

The Laguna Madre in northeastern Mexico provides habitat for Piping plover, Redhead duck, Northern Pintail, Blue-winged Teal, Wilson's Plover and many other waterfowl and shorebirds.

The project will protect 11,493 acres on private lands through a 15-year conservation agreement and will work toward establishing permanent protection for 12,567 acres in Laguna Mar Negro and 3,793 acres in the south of Laguna Madre.

It will enhance 5,972 acres through the construction of a levee and spillway and the repair of sewers, and reforest 247 acres of mangroves.

It will also place containment barriers on islands to reduce soil loss; conduct technical justification and environmental impact studies; monitor waterfowl; train community guards; and develop a management plan for the private land placed under protection.
