In partnership with the Ministry of Environment, the Cardamom Rainforest Protection Program (CRPP) provides direct forest protection to the Southwest Elephant Corridor, Southern Cardamom National Park, Cambodia.
The goals of the CRPP are to: (1) protect wild Asian elephants from snaring and prevent poaching of elephants; and (2) conserve elephant habitat and preserve continuous forest cover for elephant movement by preventing encroachment and fragmentation.
This project will: (1) support four six-person ranger teams based at the Stung Proat and Chhay Areng ranger stations by funding salaries, training, equipment (such as field boots, backpacks, hammocks, and uniforms), operations, and transportation costs of each station whose rangers will conduct 47,600 km of daily forest and river patrols; (2) strengthen good governance by building strong cases, following-up with the courts on active cases, and providing legal support to the Ministry of Environment rangers responsible for law enforcement; (3) regularly liaise and provide technical guidance to central and provincial government officials regarding development and deforestation activities in the protected area; and (4) use community outreach to strengthen linkages between local communities and the ranger stations to address encroachment and provide rapid response to incidents of human-elephant conflict.
