In January 2017, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) provides $1 million grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve food security and health conditions in Syria, and to provide special assistance to internally displaced people and returnees.
This grant was part of a ‘South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund’ that the Chinese Government established with the WHO to support Syria. $400,000 of the grant proceeds were allocated to the rehabilitation of the Emergency Department of Al Mouwasat Hospital (مستشفى المواساة الجامعي.) in the city of Damascus.
The rehabilitation took six months to complete and it involved changing electrical connections and sanitation installations, the acquisition of medical equipment and necessary technical supplies, the installation of an elevator, the rehabilitation of operating rooms, and the provision of new furniture (including beds). .
As of February 11, 2018, the project was completed.
The Chinese project title is 穆瓦萨特医院急诊中心改造项目.
