This project will: (1.a.) Prepare a diagnosis of water uses and identify opportunities for conserving water flows to conserve Laguna Bustillos and Laguna Mexicanos. (1.b.) Recover surplus irrigation water through a network of drains (32 km/19.88 miles) and ensure this water flows to restore 500 hectares/1,235 acres in Laguna Bustillos, which will be protected through a Collaboration Agreement for 20-years and to restore 300 hectares/741 acres in Rio Papigochi, which will be protected through a Collaboration Agreement for 20-years. (2) Protect 2,000 hectares/4,940 acres of grasslands associated with wetlands in Laguna Babicora (Rancho El Refugio) for 20-years through a Conservation Easement. (3.a.) Train 200 agricultural producers and implement pilot projects on best agricultural practices to reduce contamination, mortality of birds by poisoning, degradation and loss of habitat .The 800 hectares/1,976.84 acres of pilot project sites will be protected for 10-years through Private Conservation Agreements. (3.b.) Implement better livestock practices in (8,000 hectares /19,768 acres) of grasslands associated with Laguna Babicora (Rancho El Refugio), which will be protected for 20-years through a Private Conservation Agreement. (4) Monitor bird populations and habitats.
