Grant Description

This project will support the sustainable management, conservation and restoration of forests in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere.Reserve (MBBR) in central Mexico on the border between Michoacn and the State of Mexico.

Forest degradation from human.activities and natural factors reduces both biodiversity and the quality of ecosystem services associated with these forests, to the.detriment of people and butterflies alike.

This two-year project will support sustainable forest management initiatives in.communities in the MBBR to protect and conserve their forest ecosystems and secure Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).certification.

To do this, WWF will: (1) support efforts to secure FSC certification on 7,690 hectares in 16 agrarian properties in.the MBBR and (2) restore 200 hectares of priority forests for monarch butterfly hibernation, by planting 240,000 native trees on 4 agrarian properties
