On April 4, 2011, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed a letter of intent with Myanmar Energy Department of Ministry of Energy and Electricity for Cooperation in the Construction and Renovation of Local Hospitals in Myanmar. According to the letter of intent, CNPC will provide USD $6 million on an "as-needed basis".
By introducing medical technology and equipment, training medical personnel, etc., CNPC will assist in the construction and reconstruction of the Kyaukpyu Hospital and other local hospitals along the China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipeline.
CNPC will undertake a series of related work such as program design, equipment procurement, engineering construction, personnel training, and other assistance in the construction and reconstruction of hospital projects. It will be responsible for the management of the hospital during its construction.
After the project is completed, the hospital will be transferred to Myanmar for management.
CNPC also promised to use local labor resources as much as possible in the process of aid construction and reconstruction to create more employment opportunities.
On September 15, 2012, CNPC handed over eight recently completed public welfare projects including the Xinjie Town People's Hospital, 5 rural health centers, and 2 schools. Other reports stated that of the USD 6 million projects donated by CNPC, 8 schools and 19 clinics have been completed.
