The purpose of this project is to maintain the ecological integrity and connectivity, and the wealth of wildlife in the Sangha Tri-National and Northern Congo by extending the protected area network and improving management effectiveness of existing protected areas; strengthening and monitoring wildlife law enforcement to reduce illegal killing of wildlife; surveying large mammal populations to better understand abundance and distribution in key areas, and defining and implementing strategies to minimize impact and to better understand Ebola outbreaks on key ape populations.
The recipient will reduce threats to wildlife from hunting and poaching; increase and/or stabilize wildlife populations; reduce the negative impacts of logging (including poaching in concessions) on wildlife; reduce health risks to ape populations from zoonotic diseases; ensure that mining and infrastructure construction companies operating within project area take concrete measures to mitigate negative impacts of mining and associated infrastructure on wildlife and habitat; improve capacity for adaptive wildlife management; and ensure that tourism contributes to funding of protected area management and increases support among communities.
