Grant Description

Legal protection of critically endangered goliath grouper in Belize.

In partnership with Toledo Institute for Development and Environment, this project will assist the Belize Fisheries Department in introducing legal measure to protect goliath grouper based on sound scientific evidence.

Specific activities include: (1) conduct a literature review and compile existing information regarding current status of the species in Belize; (2) quantify landings at informal fish landing sites; (3) write a report outlining why the grouper needs legal protection; (4) write a letter to the Fisheries Administration outlining the rationale for protection of the Goliath grouper based upon the report (5) draft a statutory instrument for legislation (6) produce educational materials to be distributed to Belizean fishers to make them aware of any new legislation to protect the grouper.
