On January 28, 2017, the Fiji-China Friendship Pavilion was officially completed. Construction was financed by a grant from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office. The monetary value of this grant is unknown. It is unclear when construction began. The donation was part of a celebration marking the 160th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese Fijians.
Fiji’s Prime Minister Bainimarama attended the opening ceremony.
China’s Ambassador to Fiji Zhang Ping spoke at the ceremony and noted that “[b]eing a public facility situated in the center of the Suva downtown area, the pavilion is for use by the general public.
It will not only provide a place for pedestrians to sit and relax, it will also become a city landmark and new tourist attraction to many people particularly tourist from China.” The pavilion was constructed in the traditional Chinese style that can be found in temples, parks and gardens all throughout China.
It was first constructed in China before being re-assembled along the Terry Walk in the city of Suva. Its latitude and longitude coordinates are -18.138410, 178.426159.
