Chinese Government implements Phase 11 of agricultural technical assistance in Micronesia (Linked to Record ID#64030, Umbrella Record ID#64557)

In early 2018, the Chinese Government began implementing Phase 11 of agricultural technical assistance to Micronesia. It is unsure when the agreement was signed.

The mission's main goal is to support the Pohnpei pilot farm (or FSM-China Friendship Demonstration Farm) in Micronesia. Umbrella Record ID#64557 captures all 11 phases of technical cooperation. The start and end dates are difficult to pin down. AidData assumes phase 10 (#64026) ended sometime in 2018, but the exact date is unknown.

A Chinese Embassy article from March 2019 uses language suggesting the phase 11 experts had just arrived in Micronesia and were about to begin work.

Moreover, a 2019 speech from the Chinese Ambassador to FSM says that 2019 was "the first year" of phase 11 and that they hoped to complete Phase 11 in 2021.

The farm is located in the state of Pohnpei spanning 80,000 square meters including 40,000 square meters of tropical rain forests. The farm cultivates crops like sakau, yam, taro, banana, and others. The remaining 40,000 square meters houses laboratories, offices, and greenhouses.

The purpose of this bilateral cooperation is to train local Micronesian farmers, introduce new seeds, and transfer agricultural technology to increase productivity. The experts also helped build the China-Micronesia Friendship Demonstration Farm at the College of Micronesia (#64030).

During their tenure, the Chinese experts helped train Micronesian students as well as farmers on how to grow vegetables and cultivate animals.
