Grant Description

In 2016, China Foundation for Peace and Development and Embassy of China in Myanmar provided a $2 million grant to the Government of Myanmar for the Daw Khin Kyi Hospital Upgrading and Renovation Project. "Myanmar: Chinese NGOs & Projects" states that the China Foundation for Peace and Development contributed $440,000 to the hospital, so we assume the breakdown is $440,000 from China Foundation for Peace and Development and $1,560,000 from the Chinese Embassy.

The purpose of the project was to upgrade and renovate the Daw Khin Kyi Hospital in the city of Yangon (exact locational coordinates: 16.80550092936392, 96.16364282870336). The project commenced on February 21, 2017, and was completed on December 23, 2017.

While retaining the original structure of the hospital, new hardware facilities such as the diagnostic room, delivery room, operating room, and baby intensive care room were added. An inpatient building with a capacity of 40 patients was also added.

Daw Khin Kyi Hospital (formerly known as Davalin Women's Hospital, Bahan Women's Hospital) was established in 1947, under the National Women's and Children's Welfare Committee, and Aung San Suu Kyi's mother, Ms. Khin Kyi , was the director of the National Women's and Children's Welfare Committee.

Over the years, due to the old hospital equipment, the lack of professional medical staff, and the disrepair of facilities, the hospital was in a semi-discontinued state.

This project is also known as the Bahan Women's Hospital Upgrading and Renovation Project, the Davalin Women's Hospital Upgrading and Renovation Project, the Daw Khin Kyi Hospital Upgrading and Renovation Project, and the First Sino-Myanmar Friendship Hospital Upgrading and Renovation Project. The Chinese project title is 仰光杜庆芝医院升级改造.

The Burmese project title is ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ပြတိုက်လမ်းသွယ်.
