Grant Description

On June 2016, the Chinese Government agreed to provide 500,000 tons of food aid to North Korea when the North Korean Workers' Party Vice Chairman Ri Su Yong and his delegation visited China to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Delivering a letter written by Kim Jong Un, Vice Chairman Ri Su Yong requested one million tons of food, but President Xi reportedly agreed to provide only 500,000 tons. It remains uncertain if the Chinese Government ultimately corn, rice, or both.

However, in early August 2016, 20-ton trucks transporting corn to North Korea were spotted on the border between North Korea and China. The estimated monetary value of this donation is $79,610,000

📋 Staff Comments

1. To estimate the monetary value of the donation ($79,610,000), AidData takes the international price of a ton of maize in 2016 ($159.22) and multiplies it by 500,000 tons.
