Grant Description

On November 13, 2018, Prime Minister Akilisi Pōhiva and the Chinese Ambassador in Tonga have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Belt and Road Initiative projects worth $32 million with the approval of the Cabinet.

The signing was made after a reprieve from Beijing on the timing of Tonga’s debt repayments shortly before an onerous schedule to repay loans was due to start.

Further agreements were signed between Tonga and China prior to the APEC meetings for further grant aid of RMB 100,000,000 (TP$32 million) for projects yet to be finalized by both parties. The details of the projects are unspecified.
