In 2007, the Chinese Government provided a $500,000 grant to the Government of Samoa for the construction of new school buildings for the A’ele (or Aele) Primary School (阿艾利乡村小学) in A’ele village. Qingdao Construction Group was the contractor responsible for implementation. This was the second elementary school China had constructed in Samoa.
As of 2016, ten such schools had been completed in Samoa.
This was part of the pledge the former Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, made at a UNESCO meeting in 2005, which stipulated that China would build 100 elementary schools in rural areas in developing countries. The groundbreaking ceremony for the school was held on January 6, 2009. The construction period lasted 8 months, and the handover ceremony was held on September 11, 2009.
