As part of a sister city relationship between Port Moresby and Shenzhen and the Belt and Road Initiative, in 2017, the Municipal Government of Shenzhen agreed to provide a grant worth 70 million Kina for the Port Moresby Butuka School and Bus Stop Pavillion Project.
The school is PNG's first 'three-in-one' school development that includes a 1-story, 10-classroom elementary school; a 2-story, 26-classroom primary school; a 2-story, 16-classroom secondary school; and six technical rooms containing computer rooms and science labs.
Its facilities also include a hall, rugby field, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and 12 apartments for teachers, as well as equipment. The school's capacity will be 2,700 students and teachers. The project also involved the construction of a bus stop pavilion. Shenzhen SEZ Construction and Development Group Co., Ltd and China Construction Science and Industry Corp.
Ltd. were the contractors responsible for project implementation.
Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research Co., Ltd was the contractor responsible for project design.
The project, which is located in Port Moresby, entered implementation in August 2017 and was initially scheduled to be completed on November 15, 2018. However, it was ultimately completed on August 30, 2018.
This project is also known as Butuka Shenzhen Education Institute Project or PNG China Friendship School Project.
